Rays are hanging on to their playoff hopes, but they keep losing players and are unlikely to make a major addition at the Deadline. This trade assumes they sell. Ras is a good pitcher regardless of whether he’s a starter or a reliever, and the Mets could use both. The cost is high though. Benge would step into the Rays outfield just as soon as he is ready, probably 2027. Rodríguez is a lotto ticket at the position of greatest need in for the Rays. Maybe he works out and maybe he doesn’t, but the Rays need to stockpile high end talent at that position.

Like, don't love. I don't mind selling, but it has to be because we are overwhelmed.

Ras is a tough nut to figure out because he's pitching like a solid #2, being paid like a #5 for the next 2.5 years, and unfortunately is a huge injury risk. On the one hand, the White Sox received a ransom for Crochet and then the Red Sox gave him a huge contract, despite being a huge injury risk in his own right. On the other hand, Ras is making history for guys who pitched well after 3 major elbow surgeries. If the Rays are deadset on trading a SP at the Deadline, I almost think Ras should be the guy to go given the high risk that his 2.5 year deal could evaporate at any time because of the injury risk and could be just a 1.5 year deal because the final year will be the lockout year of 2027. He's also likely to be in more demand because he's pitching so well and won't cost a fortune to acquire, whereas Bradley is more of a long term play given his upside and will cost a lot more to acquire. Benge and Rodriguez are personal favorites of mine, so I'm good with this trade if Ras' value is correct, but yeah, I think he should have $30-40MM in value based on the Crochet deal (and even that includes a huge discount for injury risk).
