Not sure of Phillies 40 man sitch, but the Rays would much rather have a close reliever than 11 outfielders. McGarry is rule 5 eligible this off-season, and the Rays have PLENTY of room for him.

ElephantInTheRoom

McGary could be a useful bullpen piece while Palacios at best is probably not the best outfielder on a AAA roster which is why...its a no from me, dawg.

First off, you gave yourself a thumbs up, and that's super lame. 2nd, Palacios had a 140 OPS+ in 50 PA last year (hurt most of year), and was worth 2 WAR the year before that while playing 6 positions. To call him a mid AAA player is an amazingly dumb take.

ElephantInTheRoom

Didn't give myself a thumbs up there's a better chance you liked it yourself so you could start off your bogus defense of this trade with that nonsensical comment. Imagine boasting about a 50 PA season from a 28 year old lmao. Go look at his prior resume offensively and you'll see he's absolutely atrocious and even the metrics would agree with that. You mention his 2 war season which is fine but he still hit in the 220s so its 2 war of defense which is whatever a lot of hacks that can't hit to save their life play good defense but what's funny about that 2 war is that in his 4 year career he only has 2.2 war all together so he's basically nothing outside of 1 season in which he hit in the 220s and played good defense. Upon having to look further I honestly think calling him the 3rd or 4th best player on a AAA polite. Even bigger no from me now, dawg.

Holy moly homey, mix in a comma or a period please. I can't read this gibberish.

ElephantInTheRoom

You obviously can't read a savant or stats page either, homie.

Where you at now? Your guy is gone! For free!!!

ElephantInTheRoom

You know WRC+ but don't know how the 40 man or rule 5 draft work? That's cool. You're cool. Cool guy. Little Buddy, when you're done looking at stats that look at performance under perfect conditions 🤣 🤣 🤣 try looking up what being left off a 40 man means. After that go find Richie Palacios because I guarantee nobody ever loved him like you just did in this thread and honestly you would probably be a cute couple to some. Me? I'll just have to move on with my life while continuing to abuse commas and periods and seeing a duck as a duck...you know not like you 2 who see a duck but then think to yourself "well there's rain, wind. and a lot of bushes so its a platypus"...maybe one day though right? Maybe one day I'll have no other stat or metric to prove usefulness so I'll throw out the old WRC+ and join the cool club which could eventually get me a cool name like Shaquille Oatmeal, and make no mistake bro you're the coolest because lots of people like oatmeal in fact oatmeal is eaten throughout the world and even diabetics like their oatmeal just not the sugary kind. The kind with prunes on the side to help keep the pipes clean..but wait there's more...you're Shaquille Oatmeal so that means youre a special guy, a special flavor of oatmeal which is where my envy for you kicks in because bro, you're just the coolest. In other realities you were the face on all the oatmeal containers not that punk B Quaker Oats guy who is not even 1/3 as cool as you. Bro I bet you own a tunic and you rock it. Me? I'm khakis and a shirt, straight state farming it because I owe it to myself to bundle and save. But hey I just wrote a run on novella which probably took you a whole 8 hours to read so I'll stop it here and just remind you that you're the coolest guy to ever grace the breakfast table with their presence.

Gotta agree with Shaq on Palacios’ value. He was injured most of last year, but the prior year he played almost every position in the field while batting 103 wRC+ against LHP and 101 wRC+ against RHP. He is the ideal utility player and with 4 years of control, I have no interest seeing the Rays trade him for scraps (and that’s really all McGary is at this point).

ElephantInTheRoom

Extremely false take. Palacios in 2024 had a .663 vs rhp and a .676 ops against lefties....far from average. Nice try though.

My man elephant here thinks that "average" means "really good" rather than"average". mp420 is using weighted statistics that takes into account park factors. The Trop in 2024 was pitcher friendly because of things like bullpens on the playing field that create tons of foul territory to field fly balls that would be 10 rows deep in other stadiums, no wind for fielders to contend with, no slick wet balls for fielders to throw, no bad hops on infield grass, dense air caused by humid Florida air being cooled to 68° causing curves to break more and fly balls to deaden, and of course the really deep fences. It's not an accident that the first time they play outside, a 21-year-old hits 45 home runs and 34-year-old Yandy Diaz sets a career high in home runs. These are called Park factors, and they're part of a weighted statistic. He also has to face Yankee, Red Sox, and Blue Jays pitching more often than someone playing in the central, whereas someone in the central gets to face the White Sox, Royals, and Twins pitching. These factors are also included in weighted statistics. Weighted, Palicios was an average bat in 2024. I just don't feel any need to discuss player values with someone using OPS to determine likelihood of a player's future success. mp69 is right, and there's an elephant in the room that's wrong.

ElephantInTheRoom

I'm not going to sit here and argue with someone who uses 50 at bat samples and advanced metrics to lift a guy to average lmao when regular stats and metrics paint the picture fully and for more than just one season. There's a blind optimist in the room and its pathetic.

McGarry went 2-5 with no saves last year in AA and AAA, while Palacios hit .333/.396/.452 last year in the MLB. Are those the "regular stats and metrics" you're referring to?

ElephantInTheRoom

Ffs buddy he hits .330 in 50 at bats lmao miss me with me with. I said McGary could be a bullpen piece the word could means uncertainty in this case. What metrics? The metrics that actually show a slightly below average defender, a hitter who doesn't chase and walks but has absolutely terrible batted ball metrics. Decent range but absolutely atrocious arm. But hey let's say he's as good as you think he is lmao next question is how does he fit the Philadelphia Phillies. Is he an upgrade over Edmundo Sosa the current utility man? Is he good enough defensively as an outfielder to serve as a defensive replacement? Do the Phillies need LHH defensive replacement outfielders? Do they need left handed bats at all? I can answer that quite simply: Its a no from me, dawg.

ElephantInTheRoom

Also if you're going to throw out a pitchers stats maybe try using more than just wins and save numbers lol. He had a 3.25 ERA which is nothing special but his 12.9 k/9 is pretty good...with that said its the minors.

ShaquilleOatmeal

He's 27 years old with five innings in AAA. That's probably the most important stat. Happy to talk FIP, xFIP, ERA+, won't be talking AAA ERAs.

ElephantInTheRoom

Yeah talking AAA ERA is useless just like using a 50 AB season from a 28 year old to predict future success.

Man, you kickin' it 24/7, no matter them kids or your current wife! (Current wife is so funny to say, but please, don't tell Ms.420 ). I probably like you both.

False take? I cited stats that are superior to OPS (for all the reasons Shaq listed already). That’s not a false take. The stats are the stats. Maybe you prefer OPS or batting average, and that’s fine for you, but those stats have clear limitations in determining the quality of a player’s bat.

ElephantInTheRoom

Your weighted statistics ignore what metrics blatantly tell you. I called it a false take because I misread what I thought said OPS+.

General Manager Badge
mp2891

What are they blatantly telling me? That Palacios can hit either handed pitcher reasonably well and not be a problem at the plate, and that his defensive versatility allows him to play all positions but pitcher, catcher and shortstop well enough? I don’t understand your hostility to Palacios. Maybe he’s not a fit for Philly but as 25th and 26th players go, he’s a friggin dream player for a manager. Keep in mind that the Phillies had 7 players last year with 100 PAs or more who hit below 100 wRC+, some significantly below. Palacios would make the Phillies better, plain and simple.

ElephantInTheRoom

Metrics show none of that. They show a utility player with below average defense and a horrible arm. They show a hitter who doesn't chase which is fine. Batted ball metrics show a truly horrible offensive player that would struggle to stay average against either handedness. No use as a defensive replacement due to his below average defense and pop gun arm. No use as a bench bat because he can't hit and bats lefty and being lefty is a problem with the Phillies rn. Everything but WRC+ (which paints him as average) show he's anywhere close to an average player and honestly all WRC+ sounds like to me is "if everything was perfect". So everything basically perfect the guy only grades out as average which to me is damning. This discussion started because I stated "He would be the 3rd or 4th best player on a AAA team" and I stand by that comment because its 100% true maybe not for all AAA teams but for a lot he's not even a top 3 player. Bad players would not make the Phillies a better team....which is why...its a no from me, dawg.
