5Never gonna happen
If I'm Miami I'd rather keep Mack and move Ramirez to 1B and use Cabrera to get more infield help, Williams strikeout issues aren't improving and there's just no way you can survive in mlb when last year his K rate was like 40%, at the minimum but guys are really good defensively at their position so it's almost which will do better offensively and I think Mack has the slight edge over Williams over the past 2 seasons
Williams is the future at SS. He is the only option besides Walls for the next 4 years. He isn’t Franco at the plate but he’s the best we have. As for his SO problem, it had improved throughout the minors until last year. He started AAA ice cold, hitting 62 wRC+ and striking out 37.1% of the time prior to June 1st. After June 1st, he hit 129 wRC+ and his K rate had fallen to 31%. The Rays called him up prematurely so we will never know how his full season in AAA would have gone. I don’t doubt his K rate will always be elevated, but if he provides elite defense and a 110 wRC+ or so at the plate, he will be a very good SS for the Rays. More to the point, he will be about 4 wins better than Walls, and that’s a bigger difference than any difference between Mack and another catcher.
But even with the bounce back he's still down to being graded at a 40 hit tool, that's really tough to overcome comes that means the scouts aren't expecting anymore improvement, to me its easier to find a SS than a good defensive LH catcher that could hit 20 HRs with a 60 grade arm, I'm hoping I'm wrong though and he becomes at least a placeholder for awhile
I don’t care about tool grades when it’s obvious as hell the scouts watched him struggle in the first few months of the season and ignored or didn’t see him make adjustments before being called up. Those same scouts watched Ty Johnson dominate AA as a SP and yet still believe his future is as a reliever. Even if Williams is just a 90-100 wRC+ bat, he’s still leaps and bounds better than Walls. He won’t be traded. At least that’s my read of the situation.
