Why would the Cards make this trade?

Soler is owed $13M for next season and Stephenson is owed $11M. Cards take Soler to potentially have a bounce back at a lower cost and they need someone to be a possible closer if things go poorly with O'Brien and Svanson. Even if he doesn't have to close, then it makes for a good trade asset at the trade deadline. That would take Arenado's salary from $41M over 2 years and makes it $24M for next season. Saves $17M total for when they want to possibly contend and gets assets at the deadline. Nate Snead is a guy from Tennessee that is very similar to Tanner Franklin. Would be an interesting lottery ticket.

I absolutely see the Snead addition, I like that a lot. One of the points of trading Nado, tho is providing a runway to see what we have in the youth. If, and I mean IF Herrera hasn't fixed his catching woes, he will have to be the DH, his bat's just too good. I can see an argument for Stephenson, tho $11M is a lot for an insurance policy for 2 utes (ode to My Cousin Vinny) at least he might be useful. We already have a big RF who we're praying will blossom...we don't need another.

Bloom has talked about looking for a RH bat for the outfield. Soler did play in the outfield last year, so all I see this as is RH bat off the bench that can occasionally play the outfield. This is the equivalent of the Nick Castellanos deal but with the chance to recoup some additional value with Stephenson by the deadline. (Making the most of a bad situation)
