9What is your train of thought here for Cleveland?
Cleveland would be trading a replaceable part (Rocchio to SS, multiple 2B on the cusp) and receive a pretty good young pitcher. I could have suggested Rocchio instead but his trade value was slightly less. Arias seems to be an attractive piece for Atlanta to get.
The MIF is set for now, but that could change at the deadline.
Arias is not replaceable by Rocchio who is a far better 2B than SS. Then you weaken 2B defense and the pitching staff too as a result. Atlanta signed Mateo to hold down SS until their man gets back on the diamond. The best thing for Cleveland would be for both Arias and Rocchio to start hitting more consistently. There is nobody, not even Genoa with Arias' upside. Go ahead and be pissed at his performance thus far, but Vogt isn't giving up on that much talent easily. He's not as "replaceable" as you would like to think.
Hell,Big Bat...why didn't I think of that? "The best thing would be Arias and Rocchio to start hitting more consistently." As I said in my original comment, substitute in Rocchio for Arias in trade offer, but you will likely have to add another piece from CLE or change return from Atlanta...so a completely different vibe. Arias or Rocchio would be better than Mateo, agreed?
I wouldn't be trading Rocchio right now either. Cleveland's MIF needs to remain the same for now. Both Arias and Rocchio had good stretches last season, but they were inconsistent overall. There is still upside with both of them as they are just approaching their primes. What Cleveland needs to do is get a RHH CFer that plays above average defense and can hit a little. I was really interested in Jet Williams, but that ship has sailed. Doyle is likely still a trade option and has some offensive upside to go along with GG caliber defense in center. Whatever you do please don't mention Brito as a 2B option. Anything he might be able to do with the bat will be negated by his terrible 2B defense. Bazzana isn't ready.
OK. No trading Rocchio, no trading Arias. They have RHH CF who can hit a little vs LHP in Martinez so that solves that. They only need to be better than Detroit, KC, Minnesota, ChiSox anyway. As the mantra goes, just win the Central and make the playoffs...anybody can win in a short series.
Big Bat, here is excerpt from a writer (not Cleveland).I thoughtyou would find it interesting: Arias, 26 in February, is also out of options. He has huge physical tools: plus bat speed and raw power, a solid glove, and an excellent arm. That’s undercut by an untenable approach. Arias chases tons of pitches off the plate and too frequently gets beat within the strike zone. He had the fourth-highest strikeout rate among hitters with 300+ plate appearances. No one missed more often on a per-pitch basis. Aside from occasionally running into a fastball for a homer, he’s not going to provide any offense
Clearly whoever wrote that don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. Arias struggled with fastballs last season after mashing them in 24. It was visibly obvious that he was focusing on discipline as he probably lay had more two strike counts than anytime in his career. Speaking of his career, he was rushed to the majors at the ripe ol’ age of 22 after not playing a single game of ball in AA. His talent alone warrants patience with him. It comes down to approach. Can you tell me our top 3 clutch hitters last season? Look, there may come a point when Arias is out of time, but that isn’t right now. Hell, they don’t have a SS that’s even close to Arias’ ability there. Genao maybe, but he’s 2 yrs away at least and I’m not yet convinced he’s Arias’ equal defensively.
